WWHP @HOME CURRICULUM WEEK 5

Dd is for Dolphin and Dippy Duck. Exploring the Ocean together. Other concepts: different shades of blue, oval and triangle shapes.

For this week’s @home curriculum we are taking an imaginary trip to the ocean! We know this is one of the things we have not been able to enjoy in person recently, as public spaces such as these have been out of bounds.

Therefore, we’d like to invite all our families to accompany their children on a magical ocean adventure through music, dance, art, sensory play and so much more…as we explore, create, imagine, learn and grow together.

One of the many true gifts of childhood is the ability to transport oneself anywhere in world through one’s imagination.

So please join your children, as we all explore the beauties of the deep blue sea together.

Learning points: help children to say the sound “d”, recognise the phonetic sound “d” in different words and help older children to recognise the visual formation of the letter “d”.

Additional Montessori inspired activity: Sensory writing Tray.

Fill the bottom of a tray with sand/flour/salt or even shaving cream. Give your child the visual letter card to copy and invite them to draw it in the tray with their finger. Benefits include: Development of fine motor skills, hand eye co-ordination, development of the sense of touch, letter recognition and letter formation.

Grading shades of blue from dark to light (Montessori inspired):

This week we are continuing to explore the colour blue……and all it’s different shades. For this week we have created a Montessori inspired activity for grading shades of blue dolphins from dark to light.

Benefits: Activities like this help children begin to discern subtle differences important for visual discrimination and colour perception.

Early Maths: Sorting, matching and numeracy worksheets

We have been working with our illustrator on some wonderful ocean themed sorting, matching and number activities for this week.



Benefits include: helping children develop visual acuity and have a better understanding of comparisons/differences and patterns which are an important foundation for both language and maths.

Science and Nature: Ocean Themed Sensory Bin

I don’t know about you…but I really have been missing being able to visit the beach lately! There are so many benefits to playing in the sand and exploring the beach! This week we are going to bring the ocean to our home with this wonderful ocean themed sensory bin activity.

Sensory bins are a wonderful way to invite children to explore, discover, imagine, create, and learn whilst playing and engaging their senses.



Benefits include: Learning all about the different creatures in the ocean, fine motor skills as they manipulate and explore different kinds of objects and language skills as they expand their vocabulary during play. 

You will need:
A tub/container
Plastic fish and ocean creatures
Seashells
Sand
Water (with a few drops of blue food colouring)
Small sieves, spades etc to play with


 
Pour the sand on one side of the sensory container and then very slowly pour the water on the other side. Add your sea creatures, sea shells etc and invite your child to explore.



 

Process based Art:

This week for our process based art we are going to have some fun exploring different shades of blue for our ocean and then work on some gluing and sticking skills with the shapes OVAL and TRIANGLE for our fish.



Create your art space with a white sheet of paper, some blue paint and some white paint and invite your child to paint the ocean with you.


Once the ocean has dried invite your child to stick on the oval and triangle shapes to make the fish swim in the sea. Remember to ask them about the shapes they are using to make their fishes.

Baking/cooking: Recipe Suggestion: Fish Bites!

This particular recipe is one we do each year with the children of the Watering Whole and it is always a firm favourite! Fish is also high in omega-3 which is particularly important for our children’s growing brains!

Ingredients:

500g of firm white fish cut into cubes
½ cup plain flour
2 beaten eggs with a little milk
1 cup of fine breadcrumbs (seasoned)
¾ cup olive oil


  Place fish cubes into a large ziplock plastic bag with the flour and gently shake to coat each piece of fishDip fish into egg mixtureThen dip fish into the combined breadcrumbs and seasoningFry the crumbed fish pieces in olive oil on a medium heat for 4mins until golden, turning a couple of times.

Based on current brain research, child development information, and developmentally appropriate practices, the Feeling Buddies Self-Regulation Curriculum created by Dr. Becky A. Bailey and Lety Valero form an integral part of the Watering Whole.

According to Howard Gardner, human beings have not just one form of intelligence, but actually multiple intelligences. These intelligences form part of who we are and need to be developed and strengthened in order for us to grow and thrive as individuals.

One of the key intelligences we should be focusing on in early childhood development is Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is the “ability to recognise, understand and manage our own feelings as well as the feelings of others. It is the ability to show understanding and empathy, and it involves the ability to see things from other points of view” (Henig).
